On July 27th, 1970, I was born in Astoria Gneral hospital in Queens, New York. From what I been told.. the very same hospital my Dad and Aunt Janet were born in.. Neat , huh? Though as much of a joyous occasion this was for my family.. it was also one of worry and concern. The doctors informed my parents I had some congential birth defects and time would let us know the severity of them. The first is bilaterla (which means both eyes) Coloboma of the pupil/iris and retina/optic nerve. Basically this means some time during the pregnancy the development of my eyes stopped, leaving a "gap" in the main parts of the eye. Yes, there is tissue there.. just not the kind needed to perform visual tasks. The real worry was that Coloboma is one of the symptoms of CHARGE Syndrome, which I DO NOT have.
I also was born with microphthalmia of the right eye, which is simply an abnormally small eye. This is common with people with Colobomas.
You can easily tell this in the pictures of me.
.
Yes, I CAN see. No it is not just black and white.. or shadows.. no it is not blurry.. It pretty much mimics being near sighted with the exception that glasses can not correct it. This is the low down.. In my left eye, I have, they claim, 4/200.. which to me sounds ungodly poor.. it also looks like I have a "cat eye". The pupil being shaped elliptical over round, personally I think is pretty cool. Hey people pay big bucks for contacts that do that.. I get it fer free!! *laughs*. I no longer can see in my right eye.. this I will get into later.. I do not read braille.. I do not need a cane.. nor guide dog.. The only way most people can tell something is wrong with my vision is if I read, which is extremely close.
I have never let this effect me.. I have always been able to do anything I have wanted.. In fact most people never realize I have a sight issue.. or friends just forget.. I mean put it to you this way... I train in martial arts.. I go nearly every day.. when I first started I practicing, I trained next to a friend for near a year. One day she saw me reading something.. asked if I had left my glasses at home.. I replied.. "No they dont help I am legally blind." She just about fainted.. she had no idea. I did wear glasses as a child, but then made m vision worse. I did everything to "lose" them including flushing them down the toilet.. burying then in a childhood friend's yard or simply "forgetting: where they were.
Even with all the trials and tribulations.. having to work harder to "prove" nothing is wrong to me.. handling the exessive teasings in school. To regret it, to wish this never happen to me.. would be to lesson who I am.. It has made me stronger.. more determined.. I know what ever is set before me I can deal with.. over come.. I am happy with who I am..
Ok, enough with that. Lets move on... After coming home from the hospital things were pretty much normal. We lived in Jamica Estates, Queens, NY untill I was two. From there we moved to Lake Ronkonkoma, Long Island, NY.
From the City to Long Island...
